CA-1. The Pacific Coast Highway. If you have to explain why this road matters, you have never driven it. The road runs 655 miles along the California coast from Leggett in the north to Dana Point in the south, but the 90-mile Big Sur section between Carmel and San Simeon is what the world means when it says PCH. Ocean, cliffs, sky, and a road that barely holds on.
HISTORY +
The first coastal road segments were completed in the 1920s and 1930s, with the Big Sur section — the most difficult — finished in 1937 using prison labor. The Bixby Creek Bridge, the most photographed structure on the highway, opened in 1932. Construction required workers to be lowered by rope to hand-drill holes in the cliff face for explosive charges. The road cost $10 million and 24 lives to build through the Santa Lucia Range.

The PCH has a mythology that exceeds any other American road. It has been documented in photographs, fiction, film, and music for 90 years and none of the documentation has exhausted what the road actually is. The drive along Big Sur is different at 6am than at noon, different in June fog than in November clarity, different in a sports car than in a convertible, different every time. "The road is not a line. It is a mood." That is the only accurate description.

CLIMATE & BEST TIME +
The PCH is drivable year-round but each season has a distinct character. Summer brings the coastal fog that makes Big Sur mysterious and the Malibu section golden at sunset. Winter is clearer — December through February can offer the most dramatic visibility, with storms that make the cliffs look like a different planet. Whale season runs December through April. Slide closures in Big Sur are a recurring issue — the 2017 Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge collapse closed the road for 14 months. Always check Caltrans before planning.

Southbound (north to south) is recommended — it keeps the ocean on your side for pullouts and views, and the afternoon sun lights the cliffs from the west as you drive south.
How long is the Big Sur section?›
The dramatic Big Sur section from Carmel to San Simeon is approximately 90 miles. Allow a full day minimum — there are too many stops to rush it.
Is there gas in Big Sur?›
One station at Lucia (limited hours, high prices). One at Big Sur village. Do not assume gas is available. Fill in Carmel and again in San Simeon.
