What this relationship is all about!
Prancing or menacing, let’s put looks aside. Forget about technique, the horsepower, or the mileage.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let’s not get carried away. This is still about asphalt.
The priority for any true driver or rider is the touch. It has more to do with lap times and the sensation than most people want to admit.
Let’s navigate one of my favorite senses in the business, the touch!
The vehicle is just an instrument that translates what the road is telling you.
Before I lose you, let’s bring a few mules to the party.
Remember those mules from The Mismatch article? You can have two or four, sometimes even three.
Two or four mules speaking to you individually, telling you everything that happens from the touch, how strong your bond is, to when I’m about to lose you.
Through the shocks damping any unnecessary noise, through the chassis and steering wheel to your hands.
All in one universal language that every road speaks.
A whole lot of things can affect the signal quality. Bad tires, wrong pressure, and inadequate shocks all can compromise the quality of that touch.
The key to it all is to listen.
A tire will tell you exactly what’s happening and what needs to be done. It tells you whether you’re dealing with understeer or oversteer, a low side or a high side.
I’ve always referred to technical driving/riding as dancing on the pedals. When you get the groove just right, it feels like finesse. When you get it wrong, it hurts: your ego, your lap time, your pockets, right down to your bones, or even others.
Listening is the most underrated skill in going fast.
But you’re not just listening with your ears when the mules tell you something.
You’re listening with all of your senses, especially that G-meter somewhere near the center of gravity of your body. Some old-timers have referenced that area near your butt cheeks as your “gyro sensor.” I personally don’t have the need to question age-old wisdom.
No matter where your gyro sensor is located, you better start taking note of it. It can be the only thing that saves your behind, literally!
When you can feel your blood being pulled to any one side. When your body has to tense up just to hold your place in the cockpit.
Letting your core keep it all together, so your hands and legs are free to respond instantly.
A slight hesitation or delay, and that’s all she wrote.
The best drivers and riders do not wait for the road to scream.
They listen when it whispers.
A little weight shift. A little vibration. A little looseness in the rear. A little push from the front. A little hesitation from a mule that was confident one second ago and suddenly unsure the next.
That is the moment where touch becomes more than sensation.
It becomes information.
It becomes timing.
It becomes trust.
Because the sensual touch is not about romance. It is about awareness. It is about feeling the machine before the machine has to fight you. It is about knowing when to ask for more, when to hold steady, and when to back out before pride writes a check the contact patch cannot cash.
Looks fade. Horsepower gets old. Numbers get argued over.
But the touch?
That is where the relationship tells the truth.
And if you learn to listen, the asphalt will tell you everything you need to know.
